WILBERT TABONE
MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCHER AND CREATIVE
Greetings, well met!
I’m Wilbert Tabone, an interdisciplinary scientist interested in how technology can enhance the human condition. I specialise in Human-Computer Interaction, Neuroergonomics, User Experience design, Applied Artificial Intelligence, and Spatial Computing development.
I’m passionate about shaping the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, technology development in museums and the heritage sector, and new media art.
Research Work
I am currently a Postdoc researcher at Delft University of Technology, focusing on enhancing human-robot interactions using brain-computer interfaces. In my research, I am traversing the fields of cognitive human-robot interaction, applied artificial intelligence, neuroimaging, and neuroergonomics.
Prior to this post, I read for a PhD in cognitive human-robot interaction at the same university as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in the Innovative Training Network project SHAPE-IT.
Research Interests
Human-Computer Interaction, Spatial Computing, Neuroergonomics, Human Perception, Human Factors, Artificial Intelligence, User Experience, Digital Cultural Heritage, Creative Computation, Art Science, Generative Art.
Other roles
Before pursuing my PhD, I gained diverse experience across both private (industry) and public (government) sectors. I’ve worked in digital gaming, telecommunications, fintech, and digital technology development with a government ministry.
I've also served as a consultant in communications, data protection, and creative technology for the cultural heritage sector.
My work included organizing high-profile conferences at the European and UN levels, and being a core team member in creating Malta’s National Community Art Museum (MUŻA). I handled everything from tech development to user experience and concept store design. Additionally, I was part of Malta's National AI Task Force, shaping the country's strategy on artificial intelligence.
Since 2015, I have also served as an external quality assurance auditor with the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority, which is responsible for issuing and evaluating licenses for higher education institutions in Malta. I have been involved in about 20 audits since then.
Art, and cultural heritage
I’m passionate about merging science and technology with the arts and in museum spaces. I remain deeply involved in this sector, attending international cultural summits for museum leaders and collaborating with artists who seek to integrate art and science in their projects.
As a practicing new media artist, I constantly experiment with creative computation, generative art, and spatial computing.
I also take a keen interest in calligraphy, classical voice training, opera, theater, history and astronomy.
I’m currently part of a consortium of artists and scientists at TU Delft, working on the creation of a permanent sculpture for the campus grounds.
Activism
Separate from professional life, I am actively involved in the cultural, technology and education sectors and serve as an activist for a number of Maltese and international NGOs, including the Commonwealth Youth Council, civil rights movements, and the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality.
I have also been actively involved in the National Youth Parliament, where I have worked on several legislative bill proposals.
